Arlene was born April 26, 1932, in Warroad, Minnesota, the daughter of Lawrence and Jessie (Johnson) Hastings. She attended Jabbock Bible School in Enid, Oklahoma and North High School until 1948, when she got her GED. Arlene worked for Massey Harris, where she met and briefly dated George Stang.

On September 14, 1956, she married Raymond Kappelman. They had one daughter, Ramona. They were divorced in 1968. On August 10, 1972, she married George Stang, in Des Moines. She was a current member of the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd where she was very involved and well-loved. Arlene was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved to sing and play the piano and especially loved worship and gospel music.
