Lawrence D. Knudsen was born December 20, 1882 at Lincoln, Mitchell, Iowa to Ole Knudsen and Kari Olsdatter, the third of their eleven children.

Lawrence was baptized on February 12, 1883 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
