RICEVILLE, IOWA - Ryan M. Gaffey, 17, of Riceville, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. Burial will take place at Howard Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 407 Woodland Avenue, Riceville. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church.
Ryan Mikal Gaffey was born on September 9, 1996, son of Mark and Donna (Ewy) Gaffey in Osage, Iowa. He attended Riceville Community High School where he was completing his junior year. Ryan was active in FFA, helped in the greenhouse, and carpentry at school.
He was “Master of the Carburetor” and was able to fix anything with a motor. He often worked on teacher’s vehicles at the school. He especially liked fixing up lawn mowers for mud bogging on the racetrack behind his dad’s shop. Ryan took pride in his Dodge Stratus RT and his pickup truck. He enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, fishing, snowmobiling, and demolition derbies.
Ryan is survived by his parents, Mark and Donna Gaffey of Riceville, Iowa, brother, Darren (Michelle) Ewy of Rochester, Minnesota, sister, Angela (fiancé Ryan Ketch) Gaffey of West Pueblo, Colorado, aunts and uncles, Dr. Michael J. Gaffey of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Paula (Ambassador Larry) Dinger of Reston, Virginia, Dennis “Pat” (Deb) Gaffey of Pasco, Washington, Maureen Gaffey of St. Paul, Minnesota, Karen (Ernie) Schofield of Riceville, Iowa, Theresa (Hervey) Gaffey-Evans of St. Paul, Minnesota, Brian Gaffey of Riceville, Iowa, and David (fiancé Michele) Ewy of Elma, Iowa, many cousins, his good friends, Brian Reicks of Riceville, Iowa and Jacob Mogren of Saratoga, Iowa, and several other friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Sean, maternal grandparents, Warren and Alice (Brockney) Ewy, paternal grandparents, Paul and Roberta (Cox) Gaffey, his uncle Thomas Gaffey, and aunt Sue Gaffey.
