GRUNDY CENTER, IOWa - Joseph Francis Hemrich, 90, of Grundy Center, Iowa died on Friday, April 18, 2014, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice in Grundy Center.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 24, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, rural Reinbeck, Iowa. Private family burial will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorial visitation will be on Thursday, April 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice in Grundy Center or St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Joseph’s name.

Joseph Francis was born August 4, 1923, in Osage, Iowa, son of Bernard and Lorena (Blonigan) Hemrich. Joe attended country school in rural Mitchell County.

On September 4, 1951, Joe was united in marriage to Irene Gaffey at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, Iowa. To this union were born children, James and Candace. Joe was a farmer all his adult life farming in the communities of Osage, Stewartville, Minnesota, and then Grundy Center. While living in each of these communities, Joe made friends with many.

He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Forrester. Joe enjoyed fishing, camping, collecting toy tractors and small engines which he would take to small engine shows across the country.

He is survived by his son, James of Waterloo; daughter, Candace of San Francisco, California; brother, Jerry (Karin) Hemrich of Fairfield, Iowa; sisters, Kay (Tom) O’Neil of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dorothy (Bernard) Elwood of Crestview, Florida, and Mildred Hatten of Havermill, Masschusetts; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Ronnie and Everett; sisters, Mary Lou Hemrich and Adeline Nees.
