Georgia Irene Lindley

LA PORTE CITY, IOWA - Georgia Irene Lindley, 87, of La Porte City, formerly of Osage, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, at La Porte City Nursing Home.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at American Lutheran Church, 801 Monroe, La Porte City.

Interment will be at a later date in Rock Creek, Iowa, Cemetery.

Georgia was born April 14, 1926, in Otranto, Iowa, to Archie and Gwendolyn (Wilder) Pike. She married Leon H. Lindley on Sept. 8, 1943, in Bethany Missouri. Georgia, in her youth, loved playing basketball and was proud of winning spelling bees. Georgia raised six children. She doctored them when they were sick or hurt with skill and kindness. She brought her children up in the church and held devotions in the home. Georgia was a voracious reader and faithful correspondent signing cards or letters with “Love and Prayers.” She was very proud of her work as a nurse’s aid — especially at the Osage hospital where she took care of the newborns. The meaning of the name Georgia is “Tiller of The Earth;” that she was, she loved all forms of gardening. When the ground was not frozen, Georgia could be found planting a tree, putting in a garden or planting flowers. Georgia loved fishing and camping with family, especially on the Mississippi. Georgia always enjoyed people and touched many lives.

Survivors include three sons, Larry and wife Hettie of Poke City, Terry and wife, Carol, and Leon Jr. and wife, Sandra, all of La Porte City; two daughters, Carolyn Lindley of Springfield, Mo., and Marilyn Lindley of Des Moines; six sisters, Barb Leraaen and Mary Kittleson and husband Edward both of St. Ansgar and Audrey Goodew of Smithfield, N.C. and Frances Milne of Waterloo and Sandra Keith and husband Roger of Algona and Eileen Helfer and husband James of Sherrard, Ill.; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2002; a sister Dawn McCormack; and a son, Steven.

Memorial contributions maybe directed to American Lutheran Church or to Georgia’s home, La Porte City Nursing and Rehab, both in La Porte City.
