Virginia (DeSloover) Farus – February 15, 1931 – August 19, 2013
Virginia (Mrs. Gene) Farus, 82, of DeWitt, Iowa, died early Monday morning, August 19, 2013, in her home.
Mrs. Farus was born February 15, 1931, in Mitchell County, Iowa, near Riceville, to Ernest and Lily (Stirniman) DeSloover. Virginia graduated from Riceville High School and La James School of Cosmetology in Mason City, Iowa. She worked as a beautician early in life.
Virginia married Eugene A. "Gene" Farus on January 1, 1951, in Osage, Iowa. Gene's career with Iowa Mutual brought the couple to DeWitt in 1967. Virginia was employed by Central Community Schools in the 1970's. Her husband preceded her in death on December 13, 1995.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and an active member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Virginia also was active in P.E.O. for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and spending time with her family. Surviving are her children, David, and his wife, Joan, of Lafayette, Colorado, and Sue, and her husband, Greg Vega, of San Diego, California; grandchildren, Paul, Anne, Clare and Christian; step-grandchildren, Greg and Brenna; and a sister, Vivian Nicoll.
In addition to her husband, Gene, Virginia was preceded in death by her son, Jim, her parents, a sister, Veronica, and two infant brothers.
The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 22, 2013, with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 23, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. The Reverend Father Paul Connolly and the Reverend Father H. Robert Harness will preside and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Paul and Christian Farus, Jack Hlubek, Vern Fleagle, Gary Kunz and Dave Frohwein. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Ruggenerg, Jim Richmond, Jim Hetrick and Joe Ryan.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to Genesis Hospice Quad Cities or the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
