Lars (Lewis) Jensen was born March 16, 1843 at Helland, Strand, Rogaland, Norway to Jens Jensen and Berthe Marie Hendriksdatter.
He was baptized on March 26, 1843 at Strand. Found birth & baptismal record at Norwegian Digital Archives on-line at Strand in Strand, Rogaland, Norway 1834-1854, pg 48, bottom left. Name: Lars Jensen Helland.
Lars was the third child of four born to Jens and Berthe. His siblings were: Berthe, Jens and Peder. He also had 10 half-siblings.
He emigrated with his parents and siblings to Wisconsin. After his mother died in 1850 at Wisconsin, his father, Jens, moved the family to LaSalle, Illinois, where Jens remarried. There was severe illness in the Illinois area where the family was living and they decided to move west to settle at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa on a farm on the county line between Floyd and Cedar Counties.
Found in the 1860 census at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa: Gens Genson 45, Mary Genson 30, Lewis Genson 16, James Genson 7, Ole Genson 6, Peter Genson 3, Mary Genson 1, Martha Johnson 80.
Lars enlisted on August 18, 1862 into the Army and served in the Civil War as a private in the 27th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He developed measles which resulted in complications and was given a medical discharge being mustered out on July 29, 1863 at Moscow, Tennessee. Lars never fully recovered from the illness.
He died February 4, 1869 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. Burial record found in the St Ansgar First Lutheran Church records in Rev. C. L. Clausen's notes entitled "Early Burials at RCLC".
