TAKEN BY DEATHFuneral rites for a retired Rudd area farmer, Melvin Apel, 76, who died on January 10, 1981, at Faith Home in Osage, were held Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. J. Bates, pastor, was in charge of the rites at Eden Presbyterian Church near Rudd, and burial was in the church cemetery. Arrangements were by Sheckler Funeral Home of Nora Springs.
Melvin Apel was born on the family farm near Rudd, on December 30, 1904, the son of Martin and Magdalena Mausehund Apel. On retiring from farming he became a resident of Faith Home.
Mr. Apel was a past lieutenant governor of the Nebraska-Iowa District of Kiwanis International; was past president of the Nora springs Kiwanis Club; was past president of the Iowa Farm bureau; and was a lifelong member of the Eden Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are one son, Peter Apel of Rudd; four sisters: Clara Apel of Charles City, Gertrude Apel of rural Rudd, Mrs. Sophia Manlove of Mason City and Mrs. Frieda Duenow of St. Ansgar.
Preceding him in death were is first wife, Ruth; his second wife, Florence; his parents, one brother and one sister.
