Adam was born September 21, 1874 in Germany, the son of Conrad and Sidonia (Schade) Schmidt. On March 19, 1900 he married Margaret Brandau, who was also born in Germany on December 27, 1877, a daughter of Henry and Martha (Leimbach) Brandau.

Adam and Margaret (Brandau) Schmidt had the following children: Conrad Eugene, born on January 26, 1901; Justice E., born on March 6, 1902, Sidonia G., born on July 23, 1903 and Lissetta R., born on July 29, 1907.
