Alice Jenny (Elwell) Holt – January 28, 1895 – November 13, 1949

OBITUARY
ALICE JENNY ELWELL HOLT

Alice Jennie Elwell was born January 28, 1895, on a farm nine miles northwest of Riceville. Her parents were Lorenzo and Martha Peavey Elwell. She was the fourth child in a family of six.

In 1902, the family moved to Riceville, where she attended school, and graduated from the high school. The entire family were regular in attendance at the Methodist Church, the young people taking active part in both Sunday school and Epworth League.

Alice taught in rural schools, and the McIntire public school, until her marriage, in June 1920 to Ray Holt. As his work was in Oelwein, the couple moved there , and lived there until the time of her death.

Surviving are her husband and one daughter; Mrs. Arthur McCurry, Pueblo, Colorado; two grandsons, Arthur Ray and Albert McCurry; two sisters; Mrs. Eugene Shrode, Riceville; and Mrs. Fern Calle, San Diego, California; two brothers; T. S. Elwell, Riceville and Albert Elwell, Capron, Illinois; two uncles, Webster Peavey, Waterloo, and Newell Peavey, San Diego, California and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Holt led a most active and useful life, always seeking to do good, and to be a true friend.

She united with the Methodist Church in Riceville, March 5, 1905, and was a most active worker in the Methodist Church at Oelwein until her death. Her service as cradle roll superintendent in that church covered a period of 22 years, and was so remarkable that a number of former pastors and friends gave her a book of letters of appreciation.

She also belonged to, and served well, the following organizations; the Legion Auxiliary; the Daughter of Union Veterans; and the Order of Eastern star.

Probably few people have consistently done so many deeds of kindness in so short a time as Mrs. Holt. She was constantly sending a rose or card to someone who was ill or in sorrow. Even in the last few months of her own illness here desire was to do something good for someone. Thus it is that a host of friends and loved ones will miss her very much.

Alice married Almond Raymond Holt, the son of John Franklin Holt and Emma (Richardson) Holt.
Her husband Almond died at the Veterans Hospital in Denver, Denver County, Colorado on October 29, 1964.
