OSAGE, IOWA – Bertha E. Hennessey, 88, of Osage, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Bertha E. Hennessey

(Died August 12, 2013)

Bertha E. Hennessey, age 88, of Osage, died Monday, August 12, 2013, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 5:30 p.m.

Bertha was born February 1, 1925, in Riceville, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Tibbits) Sheldon. She graduated from Osage High School in 1943. On December 28, 1944, she married Elmer Hennessey in Osage. During the time Elmer served overseas in the U.S. Army, Bertha lived in Osage. Upon his return, they farmed in the Osage area until his death in 1977. Bertha was employed as a waitress at various places in Osage until her retirement. She was a member of the Osage American Legion Auxiliary and was an active, life member of the Osage V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She was also a member of the Sacred Heart Guild and was involved in church study clubs. Bertha was active in the Democratic Party, was a township trustee in Mitchell County, and was a girls’ 4-H leader. She enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Bertha is survived by her children, Jim (Pat) Hennessey of Des Moines, Tom (Jane) Hennessey of Edina, Minnesota, Pat (Sheila) Hennessey of Osage, and Mary (Jeff) Schwake of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Gartha (Walter) Ebert of Plainfield, Doris (Jim) Bigelow of Austin, Minnesota, June (Paul) Knecht of Richmond, Indiana, Lois Seeley of Plainfield, and Merriem (Jerry) Lane of Cedar Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Elmer.
