Berthe Maria Hansdatter was born December 1822 at Hadeland, Norway. Emigrated 1856 to Iowa, probably coming through Wisconsin. Preferred the first name Betsy after emigrating.

She married Nels Engebret Qvisle Nelson about 1861 at Mitchell, Iowa. The couple had 2 sons: Edvard Nels Bakken Nelson (born January 15, 1863, died January 25, 1945) and
Hans Christian Nelson (born January 2, 1865, died May 22, 1925).

Found in the 1870 - 1900 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1870: Nels Nelson 35, Betsy Nelson 30, Edward 8, Hans 6.

1880: Nels Nelson 53, Betsy Nelson 53, Eleward Nelson 17, Hans Nelson 15.

1885: Nels Nelson 59, Bertha Nelson 59, Edward Nelson 21, Hans Nelson 19.

1900: Nils E Nelson 73, Bertha Nelson 77, Edward N Nelson 37.

Betsey Nelson died November 5, 1908 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
