BURIAL AT NEW HAVEN
NASHUA, IOWA - Joan E. Smith, 81, of Nashua, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua with Monsignor Stanley Hayek celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the by her family, and lector will be Rita Swinton. Interment will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, New Haven with Gary Olson, Mark Smith, Dick Mauser, Marv Dietz, Charles Swinton, and Merle Johnson serving as pallbearers.
Friends may greet the family 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 15, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary along with a 6:45 p.m. scripture service. Joan Elizabeth Smith was born March 28, 1931 in rural Mitchell County, the daughter of Robert and Veronica (Miller) Mauser. Joan graduated from Riceville High School in 1949. Shortly after graduation, she married William Smith on May 6, 1950 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven; to this union one son was born. The couple moved throughout Iowa until settling in Nashua in the mid 1960's. They were happily married for 49 years.
Joan was a devoted homemaker and mother. She was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and the church guild (Burnadette Circle). Joan enjoyed fishing, gambling, and spending time with her family and friends. Her devoted family and friends will miss her.
Joan is survived by one son, Robert (Cheryl) Smith of Bloomington, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Jim Smith of Cedar Rapids; one sister-in-law, Margaret Ann (Smith) Fox of Riceville; two grandchildren, Mark Smith and Christa Smith of Bloomington, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 1999, parents Robert and Veronica Mauser.
