John Albert Halvorson – November 10, 1918 – March 1, 2005

HALVORSON, JOHN ALBERT, 86, of Palm Harbor, died Tuesday (March 1, 2005) at Manor Care Palm Harbor nursing home.

He was born in Clear Lake, Iowa, and came here in 1985 from Austin, Minn., where he retired as a manager at Hormel Foods. He was Presbyterian and a member of the Masonic Lodge and Elks Lodge 414, both of Austin, the Osman Shriners Temple, St. Paul, and the Austin Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Joyce Lessard; two sons, Ward, Austin, and Bruce, San Francisco; three stepsons, John Lessard, Osage, Iowa, Jeff Lessard, Naples, Fla., and Jim Lessard, Byron, Minn.; a brother, Donal Halvorson, St. Ansgar, Minn.; two sisters, Louise Tellefson and Laura Jobe, both of Palm Desert, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.

OBITUARY-

John A. Halvorson, age 86, of Austin, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 in Palm Harbor, Fla.

John was born Nov. 10, 1918 in Clear Lake, Iowa to Albert and Gertrude Halvorson. He attended and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1936 and went on to Cornel College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.

John was united in marriage to Joyce Lessard in 1985. He was a livestock buyer for Hormel Foods for 40 years and retired in 1980. John was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, a fifty year member of the Masons, a life member of the Elks, and a member of the Austin Country Club.

Survivors include his wife: Joyce Lessard, Austin, Minn.; sons: Ward (Dixie) Halvorson, Austin, Minn., Bruce Halvorson, San Francisco, Calif; step children: John (Becky) Lessard, Osage, Iowa, Joyce (Ken) Sprenger, Fremont, Wis., Jim Lessard, Byron, Minn., Jeff (Donna) Lessard, Naples, Fla.; grandchildren: John (Bridget) Halvorson, Nicole (Nicholas) Loutchko; step grandchildren: Joe Lessard, Alexis Lessard, Jenny Lessard, Jackie (Dan) VandenAvond, Jessica Lessard, Scott Sprenger, and Jamie (Al) VanderZanden; five step great grandchildren; sisters: Laura (Edward) Jobe, Indian Wells, Calif., Louise Tellefson, Indian Wells, Calif.; brother: Donal Halvorson, St. Ansgar, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife: LaVonne Halvorson.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2005 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Andy Lindahl officiating. The family will greet friends with refreshments following the service at church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society, Westminster Presbyterian Church, or donors choice.

note* John's first wife was Lavonne Edna Ward, the daughter of Stanley and Margaret Ward.
She was born June 5, 1922 and died October 13, 1981.
