ACKLEY, IOWA - Bernard Pelleymounter, 88, of Ackley, died on Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Our Saviour's Lutheran church in Ackley with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 17, at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.
Bernard John Pelleymounter was born in rural Mitchell County, Iowa, near Osage, on November 17, 1924. He was the son of Robin and Mary (Popp) Pelleymounter. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. He attended school in Osage and graduated from Osage High School in 1943.
In 1943, he enlisted in the service and served as a Sargent with the 101st Airborne Division in the European Theater during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946 he attended Iowa State Teachers College and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelors Degree. He received his Masters Degree in 1953 from the Colorado State College of Education and a Specialist Degree from State College of Iowa in 1963.
After teaching at Waterville and New Hartford he accepted a job as principle with the Ackley School System in 1956. He became Superintendent of Schools in 1960 and he held that position until retirement in 1985.
On August 13, 1950 he was married to Frances Altman of Osage. They later divorced.
On May 3, 1974 he was married to Merna Lund at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Ackley. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #252 of Ackley, a member of the American Association of School Administrators, the National Education Association, a past president of the Ackley Rotary Club, a church council member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, and served 6 years as the secretary of the board of directors of the Presbyterian Nursing Home in Ackley.
He is survived by son Douglas (Evelyn) Pelleymounter of Northfield, Minnesota, son Steven Pelleymounter of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, step-son Paul (Harriet) Lund of Lakeville, Minnesota, step-son John (Deb) Lund of Forest City, step-daughter Karen (Dan) Gerdes of Warrensburg, Missouri, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Merna, siblings Kenneth, Richard, Robert, Kathryn, Austie and Roman and his parents, Robin and Mary.
