Memorial services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m., at St. Timothy Lutheran Church for Lyman J. Bemus. Rev. Myron Albertson conducted the service under direction of Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo. A private family burial was held Monday in the Hudson Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Hudson AMVETS Post 82 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31.
Lyman John Bemus, 82, of 531 Eldora Road, died at his home Friday evening of cancer.
He was born in Dysart, Iowa, April 23, 1914 to Harry and Louise Prueter Bemus. He graduated from Riceville High School in 1933, and married Eileen Gooder, also of Riceville, February 17, 1935 in Waterloo. Lyman served in the U. S. Navy as a CM 3rd class during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Siboney Bay, C.V.E. 112 in the Pacific Theater, 1944-1945.
The Bemus' moved to Hudson in 1951 residing at 531 Eldora Rd. They have four children: Beverly (Bemus) Kvidera of Waterloo, Gary Bemus of Hudson, Celeste (Bemus) O'Brian of Hudson and Leigh Bemus of Hudson.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen, his children and their spouses, eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nettie Mosher and two brothers, Melvin and Myron Bemus.
Lyman, Elden Sloan and Niles Gooder founded Tri-Square Builders in Hudson. Later Lyman and Elden developed the Fair Oaks Addition and much of the Country Manor Addition. He built the original St. Timothy Lutheran Church, The United Methodist Church and the Community Church, all in Hudson. He also built various other churches in three states.
Lyman was a Past Commander of Hudson AMVET Post #82, a charter member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, and was instrumental in founding the high school football program at Hudson High School in 1957-1958.
He was a wonderful role model and good friend. He loved nature, fishing and hunting. He showed great love and was loved in return by many. We will carry with us what he gave.
