Inurnment will take place at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278.

He was born in Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, on January 26, 1927, to Robin A. and Mary M. (Popp) Pelleymounter. Romey graduated from Osage High School in 1945. In 1946, Romey served in World War II as a Cadet and later as a sergeant in the public relations department of the United States Air Force. He retired in 1989 after 42 years as owner of Leuthold Clothiers, later known as Romey’s for Men. Romey was well known in the clothing business for his extraordinary customer service. Word of mouth would bring customers and their families back to Leuthold’s year after year. Romey loved Osage and thought it was a wonderful place to live, work, and grow. This was evident by his 42 years of service as a member of the Osage Chamber of Commerce.

As an active member of the American Legion for 62 years, he held various positions including past post commander, past district commander, state vice commander and was a long time member of the memorial squad, attending over 350 funerals. He was proud of being chairman of Iowa Boy’s State for 30 years. Romey was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, the Knights of Columbus, and Sunny Brae Golf and Country Club. He had many special traits and talents, and loved singing with the Christmas Choir at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he was a life long member. He enjoyed the annual fishing trip to Canada with his brothers and friends as well as golfing, hunting, dancing, bowling and traveling.

After years as a bachelor, Romey married Marjorie (Fox) Lewis on February 7, 1976, in Osage and inherited four grown children. As he grew older, his love of the outdoors continued with hot air ballooning and sailing a catamaran with his daughters in San Diego, California. As his family continued to grow, Romey excelled at being a grandfather and great-grandfather, spending much time with them in Iowa, California and Missouri.

In May, 2009, Romey and Marj moved to Apple Valley Assisted Living in Osage. As a life long resident of Mitchell County, Romey knew most of the other residents, and was able to renew friendships, create new ones and continue to dance and celebrate life. Romey and Marj later moved to Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, and most recently lived at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Romey was such an inspiration because of his sincere love and devotion as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He has shown us that each day is special and that we should make the most of each one, living patiently with a thankful and hopeful heart.

Roman is survived by his wife of 37 years, Marjorie Pelleymounter; children, Kathy McGowan (Jim) of Marietta, Georgia, Linda Brunsvold (Keith) of Mason City, Jim Lewis (Julie) of Joplin, Missouri, and Mary Jane Worthing (Brooks) of Carlsbad, California; granddaughters, Tara Brunsvold Hofer (Brad) of Ames, Bobbi Jo Brunsvold Perau (Blaine) of Waukee, Alycia Brunsvold Thomsen (Will) of Cedar Falls, Bianca Rucireta and Sophia Rucireta, both of Carlsbad, California, Miranda Rand and Alyssa Rand, both of Joplin, Missouri; grandsons, Michael McGowan of Marietta, Georgia, and Nicolas Lewis of Joplin, Missouri; and great-grandchildren, Chase Hofer and Jack Thomsen. Romey is also survived by his brother, Bernard Pelleymounter of Ackley, sister-in-law, Dorothy Pelleymounter and brother-in-law, Robert Smith, both of Osage. He also has numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kay Elliott and Austie Smith; brothers, Kenneth, Richard and Robert; and great-grandson, Benaiah Hofer.
