On January 7th, 2009, Joseph Leonard Blong, DDS. passed away at home in Lone Oak, Texas at the age of 92. Joe was born April 3, 1916 to Frank and Regina Blong in Waucoma, Iowa.
Dr. Blong graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and the University of Iowa Dental School in Iowa City, Iowa. He moved to Dyersville, Iowa in 1946 having served 3 years in the United States Navy. He practiced dentistry in Dyersville for 32 years. During his professional life he served as president of the Dubuque Iowa Dental Society and on the Dubuque Dental Society's Professional Review Committee and participated in the People to People Program, started by President Eisenhower, where he gave clinics on dentures to dentist in Bangkok, Thailand and at the University of Hadassah, Jerusalem and Israel.
He was active in many local and civic organizations in Dyersville. After moving to Dallas, Texas in 1982 he spent many hours volunteering at a local nursing home. He enjoyed the rural life in Lone Oak for the last 12 years of his life.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Irene, son, Tom and wife Laura Blong, daughter, Mary Anne and husband Ron Spears, sister, Elizabeth Scheckel, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service celebrating Joe Blong's life at St. James Catholic Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas on January 17, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., with Father Joe Kannampuzha of Lufkin, Texas officiating and assisting him will be Dr. Mark Soloski, Deacon, of Baltimore Maryland.
Inurnment will be at a later date at Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville, Iowa. Memorials may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 303 Texas Street, Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482.
Arrangements are under the direction of West Oaks Funeral Home.

Joseph Leonard Blong was born in Waucoma, Fayette Co., Iowa the son of Frank Blong and Regina (Meyer) Blong.
He married Mary Irene Hartnell the daughter of Burton Hartnell and Mary (Neilly) Hartnell.
They are buried in the Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville, Mithell Co., Iowa (see tombstone on Iowa GPP)
