Walter Dworschak, 84, a Champaign, Illinois resident for fifty years, passed away on February 15, 2009 at Tidewell Hospice House in Palmetto, Florida.
A Celebration of Life Mass will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Palmetto, Florida on February 24, 2009 at 10am.
Burial will be at a later date at Butler National Cemetery , Springfield, Illinois.Mr. Dworschak was born on December 3rd, 1924 at Lynnbrook, L.l., N.Y. He graduated from Malverne, N.Y. H.S. and entered the U.S. Army in 1943. He served as an infantry rifleman with the 75th Division in France and Belgium receiving the Bronze Star for individual meritorious service in ground actions against the enemy in the Battle of the Bulge in January 1944.
He attended Springfield College in Springfield, MA and gradu-ated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Physical Therapy in 1952. He served for two years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and continued his work in Physical Therapy for thirty years at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, Illinois.
He married Joan Brumm in 1953 at Hill AFB, Utah. She survives. He also leaves three sons, Steven, (Judy) of Norcross, Ga., Thomas (Betty) of Atlanta, GA., and Scott of Orland Park, IL. Also three grandchildren, Madison and Wilson Dworschak, Atlanta, Ga., and Rebecca Dworschak of Orland Park, IL; several nieces and nephews survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, a step-brother, Julius; step-sister, Marie Hormon and sister, Julia Thuren.
He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church, Champaign, IL and Holy Cross Catholic Church, Palmetto, FL. Since his retirement in 1988, he enjoyed the winters at Tree Lakes Resort in Palmetto, FL, There he continued to follow his life- long interests in tennis, golf, bowling and the spring training games of the National and American Leagues playing in that area. Coaching and officiating at Champaign's Border Little League were also interests of his for twenty years.
He was active with basketball and football officiating in the Illinois H.S. Assoc. for 25 years. He was a lifelong fan of the N.Y. Gi-ant football, S.F. Giant base-ball, Long Island Rangers Hockey and Fighting Illini Teams. He loved his family, his work and a good bridge game with friends.
