Richard M. Ethen, 74, of Butler, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 7:59 p.m. at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 9, from 5-7 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Illinois. Memorial services will be on Thurs., January 10, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Father Ted Schelich, Chaplain at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield officiating. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery in Litchfield.
Mr. Ethen was born on February 19, 1938 at Stacyville, Iowa, to Louis J. and Laura (Milton) Ethen. He married Ramona Jane (Goby) Horn on August 11, 2000 in Alexandria, Missouri, and she survives in Butler, Illinois.
He graduated from high school in Iowa & majored in Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University and Iowa University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree. He had worked at Fedders Air Conditioning in Effingham, Illinois, Industrial Lifters Div. ACCO in Salem, Illinois, Crane and Monorail Div. ACCO in Fairfield, Iowa and he retired in 2001 from Dana Corp. in Litchfield, Illinois, after 13 years as a Manufacturing Engineer. He had been a member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Eagles, Elks, and Moose.
He was awarded a Patent for a tool while working for Dana Corporation in 1995 and a Manufacturing Improvement Award from ACCO Material Handling Group while at Crane and Monorail Division in 1981. He enjoyed woodworking, model making, yard work, and was an avid racing fan.
Along with his wife, he is survived by five children: Todd (wife Lucinda) Ethen of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Tim (wife Linda) Ethen of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Laurie (husband Gregg) Cottingham of North Mankato, Minnesota, Troy (wife Wendy) Ethen of Hopkins, Minnesota, Travis (wife Amber) Ethen of Pella, Iowa; one Daughter-in-law: Sherry (husband Jeff) Weaver of Austin, Minnesota; one Step-son: Mark Horn of Pompano Beach, Florida; 13 grandchildren, Tyler Ethen, Hilary Ethen, Dylan Ethen, Sheridan Ethen, Nate Ethen, EthenCottingham, Ryan Ethen, John Ethen, Katherine Ethen, Cole Ethen, Madison Ethen, Cydney Ethen, Danica Ethen; and three sisters, Betty Condon of New Haven, Iowa, Catherine Nordeen of Gaylord, Michigan, and Barbara (husband Jim) Quinn of Oceanside, California.
He was preceded by his parents and one son, Thomas Richard Ethen. Memorials may be given to American Lung Association.
