JOSEPHINE DUTTE
Josephine Zerck Dutte, daughter of Christian and Caroline Weiderman Zerck, was born on August 16, 1866, at Columbus, Wisconsin. There she was baptized into the Christian faith. At the age of three she came to Iowa with her parents and settled at what was known as Newburg, where they spent three years and then moved to a farm south of St. Ansgar. Here she received her education and was confirmed in the Christian faith.
In 1885 she was united in marriage to Henry Dutte, and with her husband they moved to a farm north of Toeterville. There she spent 51 years of her married life. To this union six children were born, one of which died in infancy.
In 1936 she and her husband went to St. Ansgar where they lived until 1938 when her husband preceded her in death. Since then she made her home with her son, Martin. She enjoyed good health most of her life time.
About a week before her death she decided to spend a few weeks with her daughter, Freeda. It was there she took ill with a cold, followed by pneumonia, from which she did not recover. She died on Saturday, March 5, 1949, at the age of 82 years, 60 months and 19 days.
She leaves to mourn her death her three sons, Martin of St. Ansgar, John of Mitchell, two daughters, Mrs. Freeda Dietrich of Grafton, and Laura of St. Ansgar. She also leaves six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Julius Hollatz of Grafton.
