Magrethe Knudtsdatter was born to Knudt and Barbro Synstegard in Nummedal, Norway, October 18, 1850. She came to America with her parents at the age of two and a half years. The family settled in Rock County, Wisconsin, where she grew to womanhood. She was baptized at an early age and confirmed in Wisconsin by Rev. Magelson.

She was united in marriage with Halvor A. Thompson of Davis, Illinois, February 26, 1874. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson came to Carpenter, Iowa, and bought a farm where they lived for many years. Seven children were born to this union; Mrs. Charles Jenkins, Schuyler, Nebraska; Mrs. Olaf Dahl, Golden Valley, Minnesota; Sam and Clarence Thompson, Northwood, Iowa; Mrs. Charley Sefert, Carpenter, Iowa; Henry Elmer and Clara Levina. The two last mentioned have preceded their mother in death. Mr. Thompson died February 13, 1901.

For the last five years, Mrs. Thompson has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Jenkins, at Schuyler, Nebraska. She was taken sich March 18th with flu-grippe, which on April 1 developed into pneumonia and she died April 8th.

Mrs. Thompson was a true Christian woman. She took great comfort in her religious books. During her last days her children asked her to read the Lord's Prayer at different times and she folded her tired hands and read it. She was well prepared to leave this world of sorrow for a better home.

Mrs. Olaf Dahl, Sam Thompson, Mrs. Charley Sefert and Mrs. C.F. Thompson arrived at her bedside April 1st to be with her during her last days. April 3rd she asked to partake of the Lord's Supper. Her children present partook of the Lord's Supper with their mother. Her son Clarence visited his mother at Christmas and was unable to be with her at the time of her death.

Mrs. Thompson leaves to mourn her loss five children, one sister, Mrs. A.C. Ingbertson, of Northfield, Minnesota, and fifteen grandchildren.
