Funeral services for Clifford Thorson, 77, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, who died August 23, 1970, at Mercy hospital in Mason City, were held August 26 at First Lutheran church with the Rev. Don Comnick officiating.

Earl Clifford Thorson, son of Ole E. and Amelia Thorson, was born on a farm in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, on May 29, 1893. He was baptized in early infancy by the Rev. Johan Olsen, and was confirmed by Rev. M.E. Waldeland at First Lutheran church, St. Ansgar. He attended rural schools and St. Ansgar high school.

His marriage to Marie Tonette Mehus took place October 3, 1917 at the First Lutheran church. They had the privilege of observing their golden wedding anniversary October 3, 1967. Following their marriage they established their home on a farm in the St. Ansgar area. To this union three daughters were born, Mrs. Wilmer (Delores) Feldt; Mrs. Arlene Kroneman and Mrs. Robert (Anita) Rustad.

He was a lifelong and faithful member of the First Lutheran church. He farmed for many years, and at the time of his death he was a part-time employee of the Campbell Commission Company at South St. Paul, Minn.

On August 23, he underwent surgery following injuries received in an automobile accident near Forest City. He died that evening.

He is survived by his three daughters, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also, three sisters; Mrs. Alma Sanders, Northwood; Mrs. Otto W. (Mildred) Tesch, St. Ansgar; Mrs. William (Rose) Fries, Kansas City, Mo.; and three brothers; Leon and Annis of St. Ansgar and Hubert of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers, Roy and Donald and one granddaughter, Gloria Rustad.

Burial was in First Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Comnick in charge of committal services.

Clifford Thorson, 77, of St. Ansgar, was killed Sunday evening in a two-car accident at a Forest City intersection. Authorities said Thorson was riding in a car driven by Arline Burnett, also of St. Ansgar. The driver of the other car was Gladys Wilson of Boone, Iowa.

St. Ansgar - Services for Earl Clifford Thorson, 77, who died Sunday at the St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital at Mason City following a car accident near Forest City, will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church; burial in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Wilmer Feldt, Mrs. Arlene Kroneman and Mrs. Robert Rustad, all of St. Ansgar; three sisters, Mrs. Alma Sanders of Northwood, Mrs. Otto Tesch of St. Ansgar, and Mrs. William Fries of Kansas City, Missouri; three brothers, Leon of St. Ansgar, Hubert of Mason City and Annis of St. Ansgar; 10 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Schroeder and Houg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sheriff Reports on Four Accidents;
St. Ansgar Man a Sunday Fatality

Four accidents were investigated by the sheriff's office, three of them on Sunday. Clifford Thorson of St. Ansgar was injured fatally and died in a Mason City hospital after the car in which he was a passenger, collided head on with a car driven by Glada Wilson, 67, of Boone at the intersection of Highway 69 and 4th street at the south edge of Forest City.

According to the report in the sheriff's office, Thorson was riding in a car driven by Mrs. Arlene Kroneman, 44, of St. Ansgar. The Kroneman car was northbound, the Wilson car going south. Mrs. Kronemann suffered a fractured wrist and lacerations. 16-year-old Debra Rustad had a concussion and facial fractures; Shirley Kronemann, 16, suffered back injuries; Mabel Westrum, 70, face and leg injuries. Glada Wilson was treated for minor injuries at the Forest City Hospital and released. The occupants of the Kronemann car were taken by ambulance to a Mason City hospital.

The highway patrol was assisted in the investigation by Forest City police and the sheriff's office. The mishap happened in Hancock county. According to reports this was the second fatality in Hancock this weekend. Investigation is still pending.

St. Ansgar Man Killed In Crash
(COURIER NEWS SERVICE)

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — Clifford Thorson, 77, was killed and four St. Ansgar residents were injured in a two car collision about 6 p.m. Sunday, just outside of Forest City.

Mr. Thorson died of head injuries en-route to a Mason City Hospital.

Mr. Thorson was the driver of an auto which was returning to St. Ansgar. He had attended the wedding of his granddaughter, Mrs. Vernon Jurgemeyer at Garner Sunday afternoon.

Passengers in the car hospitalized at Mason City are his daughter, Mrs. Arlene Kronemann; her daughter, Miss Shirley Kronemann, 16; their cousin, Debbie Rustad, 16, all of St. Ansgar, and Mrs. Mabel Westrum of Toeterville.

Schroeder and Houg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
