The tolling of the N.L. church bell last Thursday called the people's attention to the fact that there had been a death in our community and upon inquiry we learned that it was the aged father of Mrs. E.M. Swain and Mrs. Ole Eidahl, who made his home with Mrs. Swain, near Otranto. Mr. Sven had reached the advanced age of over 93 years and had enjoyed the best of health until a couple of days before his death, when he contracted a cold which proved too much for his aged body to throw off. He was doubly blessed in the fact that he remained in full posession of his faculties as well as his health, being able to care for himself and also to help about the chores even this winter.
Mr. Sven was born in Beri Prestegjeld, Norway, the 24th of November, 1810, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.M. Swain, January 5th, 1904, being 93 years, 1 month and 13 days of age.
He was married in 1835 to Ingeborg L. Klette and to this union were born eleven children, eight of whom grew up.
In 1870 he with his family left their native home and came to America settling in Rock county, Wisconsin. Here he lived until 1895. In 1892, after braving together the pleasures and cares of this life alike, for 57 years, his wife died and a couple of years later he came to make his home with Mrs. Swain near Otranto.
The children who are left to mourn his loss are; Lars, who lives in Norway; John, Martin, Mrs. A. Larson and Mrs. D.C. Swain, in Rock County, Wisconsin; Henrick of Worth Co., Iowa; Mrs. Ole Eidahl of St. Ansgar; Iowa, and Mrs. E.M. Swain of Otranto. Only the three here were permitted to be present at the funeral. He also leaves 48 grandchildren.
The funeral services were held in St. Ansgar at the N.L. church and conducted by Rev. Eggen of Lyle. The remains were laid to rest in the N.L. cemetery at this place.
