Obituary of Mrs. John Burke

On Friday, July 31, 1942, one of the old and most respected residents of Riceville, Mrs. John Burke passed away.

Catherine Connor was born at Jefferson, Wisconsin, September 11, 1856, and moved to Cecilia, Iowa with her parents at the age of twelve years. During her girlhood, she lived several years with her sister, Mrs. John Sloan at McGreggor, and then later conducted a dress making shop at Cresco with Miss Kate Irwin, both coming to Riceville in 1880. They continued their business for three years until her marriage to John M. Burke April 10, 1883, at Cecilia, Iowa.

Their first home was established on a farm in Douglas Township, moving to town in 1888, living in various locations until after the fire when the Burke Hotel was built and has been her home since August 4, 1902.

To the union of John and Catherine Burke were born four daughters and two sons: Mary, Raymond, Catherine (Mrs. Sherman Dennis). Mrs. Florence White, Norbert and Genevieve.

Besides the husband and the six children, eight grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ellen McGrane of St. Paul, and many relatives and friends mourn her loss.

The funeral was conducted at the Immaculate Conception Church by the Rev. Father O'Sullivan Monday morning at 9 o'clock, with the burial at Calvary Cemetery with six nephews acting as pall-bearers
