John Edward Dargan was born June 1840 Ireland to J​ohn Edward Dargan and ​Catherine Brady, the fifth of eight children. His siblings were: Ann, William Edward, Michael, Bridget, Mary E, Kate and Margaret.

John emigrated to New York City, arriving February 6, 1847 on the ship Sardinia.

He marr​ied Mary Ann Conlin on No​vember 22, 1865 at Watertown, ​Dodge, Wisconsin. The couple had 11 c​hildren: Kate Catherine (1867-1957); Thomas John (1868-1948); Elizabeth Ann (1870-1964); Frances R (1873-1960); Nell Ellen (1875-1961); Gertrude Mary (1877-1962); Agnes Josephine (1880-1954); James Bernard (1882-1963); Aloysius Cletus Alphonsas (1888-1972); Mary (1893-1985) and Bernard William (stillborn or died as an infant after 1900).

John was a farmer and a naturalized citizen. On August 18, 1913, he was commissioned to be the postmaster at the Riceville, Iowa post office.

John Edward Dargan died in 1938 at Ric​eville, Mitchell, Iowa​ and is buried at the Calvary C​emetery there.
