Joyce Ardell (Bork) McCready

BOLAN, IOWA - Joyce Ardell (Bork) McCready, 81, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Hospice of North Iowa.

She was born in Carpenter on January 31, 1931, to Hedwig (Beyer) and Edwin Bork. Joyce graduated from Carpenter High School, where she was proud to be on the basketball team that played in the state tournament. She became an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye men's basketball, rarely missing a game through the years and looked forward to discussing the games with her Aunt Ellie.

Joyce married Daryl McCready at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, on November 27, 1949. The couple moved to their 80-acre homestead in Bolan, which became a Centennial farm in 1990.

Joyce was always an exceptional homemaker, wife and mother who took the extra time to find that perfect gift or card for her family. Joyce enjoyed colored glassware, decorating her home and loved flowers, butterflies, dolls, and Scrabble, which was coincidentally invented the year she was born. Joyce took trips to Hills Garden Center each spring for flowers and referred to it as "Heaven."

Joyce and Daryl renewed their vows again after 52 years of marriage. Daryl, the love of Joyce's life, passed on July 8, 2004. Her son Steve helped maintain the place after Daryl's passing, keeping all things beautiful - yard, flowers, garden ornaments.

Joyce loved spending time with family and friends. Many times she joined two best friends, Ilene Milbrandt and Del-Rose Rosenberg, visiting malls and going out to lunch. Joyce's pride and joy were her three children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She felt blessed to have them and treasured the time spent with them and always spoiled them.

Joyce's claim to fame was the whole town of Bolan appearing on the David Letterman show in 1989. She loved to visit Branson, watch the spectacular shows and had pictures taken with Roy Clark, Mel Tillis, John Davidson and others. Joyce was nominated Grand Marshall of the Bolan Stand Still Parade in 2011 during Bolan's 125 year celebration. Joyce was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Grafton since 1965. Her tombstone was personally designed in awaiting anticipation of her heavenly home.

Joyce is survived by her three children, Cheryl, (husband John) Thompson of Urbandale, David (wife Tammie) of Mason City, and Steve of Bolan; granddaughters (twins) Jennifer Thelen (Rob) and Michelle Brunk (Andy), Angie Thompson (fiancée Dean Sass), Shannon Duncan (Chris), and Jessie McCready; grandsons Jamie and Jeramie McCready; great granddaughters Miranda and Bryant Thelen; great-grandsons Sterling and Avery Brunk; sister Janet Latshaw; sister-in law Doris McCready, as well as special aunts, nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband Daryl, parents Hattie (Hedwig) and Edwin Bork, her in-laws Anna and Blair McCready, brother in-laws Johnny Latshaw and Don McCready, daughter-in-law Kathie McCready, and niece Cindy Richards.

Visitation is scheduled for tonight, Tuesday evening, June 19, from 5-7 p.m. at Schroeder and Sites Funeral home in St. Ansgar.

The funeral is scheduled for June 20, at 1 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Grafton, with Janet Dorenkamp officiating.
