Services Held For John M. Scheffel, Former Resident

John Mathew Scheffel, 76, died Thursday morning, Feb. 4, at the Norby Nursing Home. He was born May 16, 1877, on a farm near Carpenter, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Scheffel.

When a young man he was confirmed at the Rock Creek Lutheran church; later he moved with his parents to a farm near Rudd, where he lived until his marriage to Alice Breakey. They had two daughters, Bernice (deceased) and Velma, now Mrs. Les Barker.

Jack, as he was known to many friends, lived in Nora Springs more than 50 years; 38 of those years were spent as Marshall or water department superintendent for the town.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, a daughter and her husband, and one grandson and his wife; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Rose Dreher, Mrs. Emma Breakey of Nora Springs and Mrs. Lillian Albert of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by a daughter in 1939 and by his father and mother and 2 brothers.

The funeral was held at the Sheckler Funeral Home, February 6, at 2 p.m. Rev. W. F. Ellerbeck was in charge of services and burial was in Park cemetery.

Mrs. Roy Kraupa, accompanied by Mrs. Carl Crowell sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Abide with Me".

The pallbearers were: Albert Nagel, Clair Walker, Ory Morphew, Roy Baker, Clarence Boeck, and Ernie Brown.

John Mathew Scheffel was born May 16, 1877 in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of John (Schoeffel) Scheffel and Louise Caroline Mauer.

His father was born with the surname SCHOEFFEL, but the surname must have been shortened along the way to Scheffel.

John Scheffel married Alice Breakey, the daughter of James Breakey and Henrietta Boyer.

The daughter Bernice mentioned in his obit was Bernice Scheffel Unseld. She was born November 29, 1906 and died in Illinois on March 30,, 1939. She was married to Elston Unseld.
