AT OSAGE; AGE 83Resident of Mitchell County
More Than Half a Century;
Funeral Will Be Held TodayOSAGE, IOWA - Edwin Luther Sawyer, 83, died at his home on State Street Saturday morning at 2:30.
He was born August 20, 1843, near Rome, New York, and when seven years of age came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amariah Sawyer, and family, to Wisconsin over the Erie Canal and by way of the Great Lakes, locating on a farm near Columbus, Wisconsin. In the late 60's, Mr. Sawyer came to Mitchell County and had lived here ever since. He bought a farm in Rock Township and also owned another south of Osage.
For many years he was principal of the schools in St. Ansgar and in Mitchell. In the latter place he married a student -- Miss Julia Hoyt.
The only surviving child of this union is Prof. Sawyer, of Osage.
E. L. Sawyer was a prominent business man here for over 30 years, dealing in real estate and insurance. For 21 years he and his brother-in-law, O. P. Woodard, were in partnership, selling sewing machines and musical supplies, as well as handling insurance and real estate.
The funeral was this afternoon at the Baptist church, with Rev. Mr. Babbitt, Iowa Falls, in charge. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery.
