#1: DEATH NOTICE:

Miss Julia C. Addington died at her home in Mitchell County on September 21, 1875. She was the first lady Superintendent of schools ever elected in Iowa, and it is said to have been the first instance in American history in which a woman was elected to any office at a popular election.

Julia was born June 13, 1829 in New York, the daughter of William. H. Addington Sr. and Alvira (Potter) Addington.

A quote from that source indicates her parents' names:

"Six years earlier, Addington had moved from Wisconsin with her parents and siblings to Stacyville in northern Mitchell County, where they farmed. Her father, William H., Sr., was also an “agent” for the Mc-Cormick and J. I. Case farm machinery companies. He and his wife, Alvira, divorced around 1867. He moved to Missouri, and she remained in Stacyville with Julia and her other adult children."
