Homer I. Stacy died at his home in Stacyville, March 1st, 1887, aged about 67 years. He was one of the best known men of Mitchell county, and one of the best and truest.

Death: March 1, 1887, Stacyville, Mitchell County, Iowa.

Homer Stacy was the founder of Stacyville, Iowa.

He was very ambitious as a boy and spent as much time as he could in school. When he reached 21 years old he started at Governeur Weslyan Academy and stayed there for two years while also teaching.

In the fall of 1843 he went to Cleveland, Ohio, and stayed there until 1845 teaching and clerking. He then joined friends on a trip to Chicago. He got sick and stopped at Dover, Illinois. When he recovered he worked at teaching and trade.

The year following he was married. After ten years there he sold his businesses, which consisted of a store, lumber yard and farm.

He started west on a prospecting tour and in Iowa, in Mitchell County, he found a large tract of land on the Little Cedar River. He and his brother, Fitch B. Stacy, purchased the land which includes the present city of Stacyville, Iowa.

He spent the winter of 1855-1856 with his family in Mitchell and the following spring platted the village, which he named Stacyville. He built a store and home the same spring and moved his family to their new home. He started a store and also farmed.

In 1856 he built a schoolhouse and with others built a mill, and he was the justice of the peace.

The 15 years prior to his death he led a quiet life due to ill health. He and his wife took a trip to Chamberlain, South Dakota, to spend the winter with their son B.F. Stacy, who was engaged in business. They remained there until February, when his health declined and they returned to Stacyville. When they reached Lyle his health became worse and they were hardly able to get him home. He went to bed with the illness and died three weeks later on March 1, 1887.

His family stayed on the farm with his widow. She moved with her daughters Delia and Frances to Osage, Iowa.
