Vern John Gronwoldt – March 11, 1923 – February 7, 2011

Vern Gronwoldt, age 87, of Riceville, died Monday, February 07, 2011 at his home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 11, 2011 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Riceville with burial in Sunnyside Memorial Garden at Charles City, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville. Visitation will continue on Friday for one hour prior to services at the church.

Vern John Gronwoldt was born on March 11, 1923 in Deerfield Township, Chickasaw County, near Alta Vista, Iowa, the son of Henry J. and Dora K. (Schade) Gronwoldt. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista. Vern attended the rural school near his home and graduated from Alta Vista High School.

On October 19, 1952, Vern was united in marriage to Betty Jean McBride at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on the farm in Chickasaw and Howard Counties until 1986 when they retired and moved into Riceville.
Work was enjoyment to Vern and he continued doing something right up until his death.

He had a big garden which he toiled in, he had many walnuts that he would sell and give the money to charity, and he had honey bees which he would spin the honey from the hives.

Vern is survived by his wife, Betty; six children: Robert (Norma) of Waterloo, IA, Gary of Burlington, IA, James (Brenda) of LeRoy, MN, Virgil (Tina) of Mapleton, IA, Jean (Ralph) Young of Des Moines, IA, and Nancy Spooner of Des Moines, IA; 13 grandchildren: Sarah; Gary, Ashley and Amber Gronwoldt; Brandon and Jamie Pingel; Adam, Brandi and Crystal Young; Dennis and Melissa Young; Amanda and Mercedes Spooner; Philip, Curtis, Amy and Teresa Gronwoldt; two great grandchildren: Blake and Emma Pingel; and one sister: Edna Sir of Elma, IA. Vern was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Leonard, Marvin, Sr. and Walter; five sisters: Dorthea and Rose as children, Norma Bill, Esther Hurst, and Alice Ross.
