Guttorm Anderson was born January 11, 1831 at the Saugshaugen farm, Gran, Hadeland, Norway, to Anders Christensen and Lise Nielsdatter. He had at least one brother, Nils Anderson (born March 30, 1823 at Gran, Hadeland, Norway, emigrated to Iowa, death date unknown).
Guttorm married Johanne Gudbrandsdatter on September 12, 1852 at Gran, Hadeland, Norway. (Johanne Gudbrandsdatter was born February 15, 1824 at Skiakerseiet, Gran, Hadeland, Norway to Gudbrand Hansen and Ronnouv Jacobsdatter, died August 14, 1906 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.)
The couple had five children while living at Saugshagen, Gran, Hadeland, Norway:
1. Anders (born July 6, 1851);
2. Ragnhild (Randi) B. (born September 13, 1853, married Ole Halverson June 2, 1874 at Gran, Norway, died 1917 at Buffalo, Winnebago, Iowa);
3. Gubjorg (born February 28, 1857, married Johan Olson November 25, 1882 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa, died March 29, 1939 Mitchell, Iowa);
4. John Gerhard (born June 14, 1859, married Karen Gudbrandsdatter Liaeker March 6, 1885 at Rock Creek Lutheran, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa, died August 26, 1916 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa) and
5. Christian (born September 28, 1862, moved to Wisconsin)
Guttorm, with his wife and five children, left Hadeland, Norway to emigrate to America on May 7, 1874 aboard the ship "Oder". They traveled to Mitchell County, Iowa where Guttorm started farmng. The family joined the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Iowa.
Family found in the 1880 census living at Rock township, Mitchell County, Iowa: G. Anderson 51, Jane G. Anderson 57, Julia Anderson 22, John Anderson 20, Cris Anderson 16.
Found in the 1885 and 1900 censuses at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1885: Giton Mandison 54, Jenny Mandison 62, Christian Mandison 22, John Anderson 26, Carn Anderson 25, Gilbert Olson 8.
1900: George Anderson 71; Johanne Anderson 76.
