Reverend Herschel Landis Hawf -- March 19, 1913 – April 28, 2008

Reverend Herschel Landis Hawf age 95, of Riceville, Iowa passed away at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage, Iowa on Monday April 28, 2008. Funeral services were held on Saturday May 3, 2008 at 1:30 PM at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Riceville, Iowa with Dr. Carl E. Pavey. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Herschel Hawf was born on March 19,1913, in St. Francisville on the family farm in Lawrence County in Illinois to Oval Lewis and Goldie Neva (Landis) Hawf. He graduated from Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, IL in 1930. Following high school Herschel worked for five years for King farms. During this time Herschel received his calling to the ministry. Herschel attended Greenville College and received his Degree in Divinity in 1940.

On August 1, 1941, Herschel was united in marriage to Corinna Wilson in Greenville, Illinois. Herschel and Corinna began their ministry in the Free Methodist Church in Sept. of 1941 in Lyons, Indiana. They continued their ministry in Indiana and Illinois until 1952, when they moved to Iowa.

In the summer of 1955 they were appointed to serve the Riceville Free Methodist Church. During his pastorate Herschel also served as a stationed superintendent for the Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota Conference of the Free Methodist Church. from 1957 to 1965 In 1967 they moved to Sioux Falls, SD. The next twelve years were spent serving the Free Methodist Churches in Sioux Falls, SD, Le Mars and Mason City, IA.

They then returned to Riceville and served the Free Methodist Church again until retirement in 1984. He continued his ministry by serving the Free Methodist, Church of David and the First Congregational United Church of Christ as interim pastor and when needed. In the late 1950's, he enjoyed his time as a school bus driver for the Riceville Public schools.

Herschel was a charter member and past president of Kiwanis, a member of Riceville Community Club, had served as Chaplin of the I00F Home in Mason City, IA, and volunteered his time to drive people to appointments. Herschel enjoyed family, stories and visiting with all people.

Survivors include three daughters; Esther and her husband Raymond Asfahl of Riceville, Iowa, Ann and her husband Dale Rademaker of Waukon, Iowa, Jennie and her husband Gene Clement of Spencerport, New York, one son: John Hawf and his wife Pam of Lester, Iowa, 12 Grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and two sisters: Nelma Hawf of Mount Carmel, Il and Imogene Brines of Avon Park, Fl., and many nieces and nephews.

Herschel was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Corinna in 1997, one sister, Kathleen Straw in 2006.
