NORTHWOOD, IOWA - Marlene Carol Hulshizer, 71, of Northwood died Tuesday, Feb. 28, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. 9th St., Northwood, with Pastor Karen Grandall officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. March 1 at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S., Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on March 2 at the church.

Marlene Carol Hulshizer was born on March 27, 1940, at Osage, the daughter of Orlo and Della (Perau) Jensen. Marlene was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on April 11, 1954, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar.

She received her education in the St. Ansgar Public Schools, graduating from St. Ansgar High School in 1958. Marlene also attended Minneapolis Business College.

She was united in marriage to Gerald "Jay" Hulshizer on September 20, 1959, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar and to this union four children were born.

After their marriage Marlene worked as a secretary for Wallace Johnson in Northwood and for 17 years cooked for Congregate Meals and Meals on Wheels in Northwood. She also worked briefly at Sue's Cornerpost.

Marlene enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and grand-dog Sasha playing Shanghai and 500 cards, golfing, fishing, reading, crocheting and gardening.

Marlene was a member of First Lutheran Church and Rachel Circle and held many offices, a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, and Boy Scout, Girl Scout and 4-H leader. For many years, she was the Girl Scout Nut Lady, belonged to Twenties Study Club, was Agape Ministry Coordinator, held several local, district and state offices in the VFW Auxiliary and was on the Northwood Board of Adjustment.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Debra Athey of Northwood, Trisha (Doug) Lang of Osage, and Douglas (Erin) Hulshizer of Colo; seven grandchildren, Courtney and Mitchell Athey of Northwood, Abbie and Andrew Lang of Osage, and Allison, Kate, Megan Hulshizer of Colo; her sister, LaDonna (Tom) Gratias of Clive; brothers-in-law, Gene Hulshizer of Las Vegas, Nev., Ronald (Marcia) Hulshizer of St. Ansgar, and Russell (Marlene) Hulshizer of St. Ansgar; as well as many nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald Wayne Hulshizer; son, Scott Wayne, who died in infancy; and grandson, Nicholas Drew Hulshizer.
