Miss Ethlyn Davis died in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, October 7, 1897 aged 20 years. These are the sad words which must be said of one, who a year ago seemed to have as fair chance of life as most of us. To her many and faithful friends here, the news comes with a sorrowful meaning for it speaks of a smile never more to be seen on the bright and cheerful face, and of a life full of service and devotion, that is ended forever on earth.
In early spring some solicitude was felt, because of her impaired health, but not until July did the disease manifest itself alarmingly. At that time she was obliged to lay aside all duties and seek entire rest. A little later it was thought that a change to Canon Falls the home of her sister, Mrs. Clinton Conley, and the treatment there might be beneficial. But God ordered it otherwise. She continued to fail and to her friends it was evident that the end was near. When the leaves were falling and nature was putting on funeral garments, the spirit of Ethlyn departed. Here on earth the bereaved are weeping, because of her early death, but in heaven "there is another robe of white, another crown of life with fadless jewels bright."
The body was brought to Osage on Friday, and the funeral was held on Sunday at half past two p.m. The church was filled with loving and sorrowing friends who were looking their last upon one who had attended and taught school in her home town and who was loved by all.
The pastor spoke from the words of Paul, Phil. 1:21, "For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain." Many and most beautiful were the floral tributes, that showed the high esteem in which she was held. She has gone from our midst, but she has only left pain and sickness here to find rest and peace above.
