Mary Langehough was born May 4, 1926, and grew up in St. Ansgar, Iowa, where her father was pastor of First Lutheran Church. She graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1943.

Her parents were the Rev. Olaf A. Langehough and Hazel Langehough. She had a younger brother, John Olaf Langehough (1928-2008). Her middle name is Elaine.

The family had moved to St. Ansgar in September 1927.

In 1950 Mary Langehough was an instructor in the Canby, Minnesota, High School, according to an article in the Mason City Globe Gazette, June 9, 1950. In 1955 an article mentioned she was teaching in Denver, Colorado. She had accompanied numerous solists or vocalists at various events which her father officiated at.

According to articles in Rocky Mountain News, November 1990, November 1992 and November 1994 various students were given the "Mary Langehough Service Award."
