Dies Fargo, N.D.;
Reared At Riceville

Mrs. Myrtle Short, 70, who lived for many years in this county, died at her home at Fargo, N.D., July 2, 1944. She was reared at Riceville and with her family lived at McIntire for some time before they moved to Fargo, North Dakota.

Myrtle Josephine Short was born June 10, 1874, to Albert and Frances Niles, at Oregon, Wisconsin. She moved to Riceville with her parents, where she spent her childhood and received her grade and high school education.

Her marriage to William M. Short took place at Riceville on May 28, 1890. To this union seven children were born, a daughter and six sons. Surviving are: William F., of Fargo; Rutherford D., McHenry, N.D.; and Lt. Melvin, Manhattan, Kansas. Four of the children -- Ruth, Cole, Dan and Aubrey -- preceded her in death. Her husband passed away on December 9, 1937.

Mrs. Short resided almost continuously in North Dakota and lived at Talna, McHenry, Juanita, Carrington and Fargo. While in Carrington she became a member of the Baptist church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Wherever she lived she made friends with everyone because of her kindness, consideration and thoughtfulness toward everyone's comfort and needs.

For several years Mrs. Short had suffered a heart ailment. During the past winter she spent a great part of her time in St. John's hospital at Fargo. June 27 she underwent a major operation, from which she did not recover.

Besides her sons, she leaves to mourn her passing, two brothers, Harlo, at the Carrington hospital and Herbert of Detroit, Michigan. She also leaves four daughters-in-law, Edith of Fargo, N.D.; Florence of Manhattan, Kansas, and Deana of McHenry, N.D. There are 31 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Besides her own family there are many others who considered her a part of their own families as Grandma Short.

The body was laid to rest beside her son, Aubrey, at Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.
