MILES K. CULVER, ST. ANSGAR EDITOR, DIES
HEART DISEASE TAKES VETERAN REPUBLICAN IN NORTH IOWA

St. Ansgar, Sept. 19 – Funeral services for Miles K. Culver, 62, editor of the St. Ansgar Enterprise for the past 40 years, who died at his home at noon yesterday, will be held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Church here.

Mr. Culver was born in Corning, New York, and when 12 years old moved to Brown’s Valley, Minnesota. Later the family moved to Riceville and Mr. Culver entered Upper Iowa University at Fayette.

Mr. Culver was an ardent supporter of Upper Iowa, especially during the past two years after it had been severed from the Methodist conference in Iowa.

Thru his newspaper, Mr. Culver played a prominent part in progressive republican politics with Senator Smith W. Brookhart. Mr. Culver was a user of the old time makeup running his editorial in the first column of the first page. Mr. Culver maintained that if there is any decline in the effectiveness of newspaper editorial comment, it was the fault of the newspaper themselves in burying the department in the interior of the paper.

For a number of years, Mr. Culver was identified with the cooperative elevator movement in Iowa and at one time was a member of the extension service of Iowa State College.

During his regime as Mayor, St. Ansgar acquired electric lights.

He is the father of Rush Culver, editor of the Manly Signal and postmaster of Manly, and an older daughter, Lucille. He is also survived by Mr. Culver and two other children, Allyn and Donna.
