GILLES, VERNON M.

Vernon Matthew Gilles was born on February 26, 1917, along with a twin sister, Marian, at Stacyville, Iowa, to Roy and Theresa (Seibert) Gilles. He attended grade and high school at Stacyville, Iowa graduating from high school in 1933.
Vernon joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. and was stationed at Decorah, Iowa for several years.
In 1941, he was inducted into the Army Air Force and was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas to train at the Air Corp Technical School. He took further training in airplane mechanics at Santa Monica, California, specializing in the care and mechanics of the Army's B-25 Bomber. Some time was spent at Columbia, South Carolina for combat training.
In 1943 he was sent to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where he was assigned to the 309th Bomb Gp. Det. reading B-25 Bombers for flying on air raids to the South Pacific.
In 1945 he reenlisted in the Air Force Reserve, was stationed in Denver, Colorado, at Monarch Airlines, then to Elgin Air Force Base in Florida. he was discharged from military service in October, 1952.
After his discharge, he was employed at Theobald Implement Co. in Stacyville, Jorde Motors in Osage and Saab Garage, Meyer, Iowa as a mechanic.
Vernon made his home with his parents where he remained until his death in April 1979.
