GILLES, ROY WILLIAM July 9, 1895 – July 19, 1967

Roy Gilles was the youngest son of John and Catherine (Hartogh) Gilles who came from Wisconsin to settle and farm southeast of New Haven, Iowa. He was born on July 9, 1895 on that farm.
Roy had five brothers: Joseph, Matthew, Herman, William and Bernard, and four sisters: Mary, Anna, Elizabeth and Winnefred.
In April 15, 1915 Roy was married to Theresa Seibert, daughter of Jacob and Mary Seibert of Stacyville, Iowa. They had three children while on the farm, a set of twins, Wilfred and Wilmer, and Rueben.
Roy quit farming and bought a restaurant in Stacyville (which is presently the Cue Inn). They had two more children, another set of twins, Marian and Vernon. In August of 1919, when these twins were only six months old, his wife, Teresa, died of typhoid fever.
Her sister Anna Seibert helped care for these five children and Roy and Anna were married on November 17, 1920. Five children were born to them. They are Theresa, Daniel, Elizabeth, Adeline and Paul.
Roy was town marshal of Stacyville for 20 years. He also did landscaping work, sold Tomco seed corn and was weed commissioner for the county.
Roy died of kidney failure at age 72. Annie died six years later at age 87. Of their ten children, three remained in Mitchell County: Vernon Gilles (now deceased), Mrs. Clarence (Elizabeth) Hemann, and Mrs. Marvin (Adeline) Krebsbach.

#2:Roy Gilles passed away on July 19, 1967. He was survived by all 10 of his children and his 2nd wife Anna (Seibert) Gilles. He was buried in the Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville, Mitchell Co., Iowa

NOTES ABOUT N.E. IOWANS IN THE SERVICE
STACYVILLE - There are not many families in the nation to boast six sons and a daughter in the armed service of the United States
That honor has come to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Gilles of Stacyville, whose sixth son enlisted this week in the navy. He is Paul Gilles and was graduated from Visitation High School, Stacyville, last week.
The other boys are Wilmer and Wilford (twins), who have been overseas for over two years, the former in Africa and the latter in Italy; Reuben, in Italy; Vernon, in South Carolina, and Daniel, in Australia. The Gilles' daughter. Marian, is a cadet nurse at Cedar Rapids. She is a twin sister of Vernon.
