August Henry Theodor Bartz, son of August Wilhelm and wife Wilhelmine, was born at Barkow, near Griefenberg, Pomerania, Germany, October 28th, 1831, and as a Lutheran baptized November 13th, the same year. After two and one half years of service in the Prussian army he was honorably discharged. In the year 1857 he was united in marriage to Albertine Hannah Catharine Marie Bruss. To them were born nine children. Six of them who survive are August, Robert, Mrs. Antonie Schroeder, Mrs. Addie Glassel, Misses Emma and Alreka. They lost two children on their way to America, one of which found its grave in the ocean deep.
They first settled in Wisconsin, later moved to Newburg township, Mitchell County, Iowa, making it their permanent home. The wife of the deceased died November 14th, 1906, being 70 years old. She was an invalid for 17 years. In the fall of 1907 he moved to St. Ansgar, to spend his last years of life. Unfortunately, these were not without pain, for in August, he broke his leg, never regaining his old strength. In August, 1912, he took sick with stomach trouble. This being worse at times, caused his death. Thursday, March 13, he asked for the Lord's Supper, which was given to him by his pastor. Friday morning at 2 o'clock he peacefully passed into eternity, reaching the age of 81 years, 4 months and 17 days.
