We are called upon this week to chronicle the death of Philip Eveleth one of the old settlers of Newburg township. His death occurred Monday morning, August 13, 1888, after a few day's illness. Mr. Eveleth was taken with a violent attack of summer complaint on Tuesday night of last week, but the attending physicians succeeded in checking the disease, but the patient gradually failed until the intervening hand of Death released him from his sufferings. Mr. Eveleth was born in New Glocester, Maine, February 5, 1808, consequently was 80 years of age on his last birthday. 1836 he removed to Illinois and in 1863 settled with his family in Newburg township. Mr. Eveleth was married to Mary L. McCollough in 1853, by which union they had two children, Mrs. S.B. Pickell, of Northwood, and Mrs.L. G. McKinley, of Newburg. Deceased graduated from the theological department of Yale College when a young man and was a minister of the gospel for nearly forty years. He was an earnest christian, and walked quietly through life doing what he believed to be right and just. He was an indulgent father, a devoted husband, a good neighbor and a true friend. No man deserves greater praise than this. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church yesterday afternoon and the remains were laid away in the Newburg cemetery.
