Catherine Buchanan (Smith) Springer

June 5, 1857 – September 1, 1937

MRS. C. SPRINGER
FUNERAL SATURDAY

Funeral services for Mrs. Catherine Springer were held at the Methodist Church at St. Ansgar, Iowa, last Saturday afternoon, Rev. Alshouse officiating. Interment was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery beside her husband.

Mrs. Springer passed away last Wednesday from complications of old age. She had been ailing since last November, and grieving over the death of her brother Frank Smith of Clemens Grove, Iowa, who died four weeks ago at the age of 78, is thought to have hastened her passing.

Mrs. Springer lived in Lake Park with her sons William and Oliver for the last five years and was a frequent visitor here several years prior to that time.

Catherine B. Smith, daughter of Hayden H. and Margaret E. Smith, was born at Bivens Grove, Marshall County, Iowa on June 5, 1857, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Whaley, near St. Ansgar, September 1, 1937, being 80 years, 2 months, and 27 days of age.

On March 30, 1881, she was married to Jeremiah Springer, at St. Anthony Iowa. To this union ten children were born, three of whom preceded her in death, two in infancy, and the other, Mrs. Edna Jones, last October.

The family lived at St. Anthony until 1913, when they moved to Osage for two years, at St. Ansgar three years, Milltown, Wisconsin, five years, Lyle, Minnesota, four years and then back to St. Ansgar as long as they continued housekeeping. Mr. Springer passed away on August 18, 1929.

Mrs. Springer is survived by two sons and five daughters. They are Oliver and William, Lake Park, Iowa; Mrs. Roy Whaley, St. Ansgar, Iowa; Mrs. A. L. Rasmussen, Westdale, New York; Mrs. Wilfred Ripley, Iona, South Dakota; Mrs. Wilfred Ripley, Iona, South Dakota; Mrs. Walter Ball, Bemidji, Minnesota; and Mrs. Lawrence Rockafellow, St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Besides her children, she is survived by seventeen grandchildren, and one brother; Ira C. Smith, Marshalltown, Iowa; and one sister; Mrs. Wilmer Hollingsworth, Union, Iowa.

Mrs. Springer was a devoted wife and a loving mother , and always glad to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. At an early age, she united with the Christian Church at Bivins Grove, Iowa, and has always lived a sincere and devoted Christian life.

Mrs. Springer was the second white child born in Marshall County, and lived in Iowa her entire life except five years at Milltown, Wisconson, and about four years at Lyle, Minnesota.

William and son Lloyd and Oliver Springer went to St. Ansgar last Friday morning and attended the funeral services Saturday; returning home that evening.
