Maud Florence (Sutton) Wherry – February 29, 1872 – May 28, 1961
Maud Florence Sutton was born in Jackson County, Iowa on February 29, 1872, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sutton. Her mother died when she was nine years old, and she assisted in the care of two younger brothers and three sisters.
She was married January 14, 1891, to Frank Wherry at Anamosa. They lived on various farms in Iowa and moved to her present home in McIntire, Iowa in 1926. She was active in the Methodist Church in McIntire, and made quilts which she presented to members of her family.
Maud Wherry, 89, died Monday at her daughter's Marguerite's home near Floyd following an illness of two weeks.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the McIntire Methodist Church. Burial was in the Wayne Cemetery near McIntire, Iowa. Casket Bearers were: Dale Erbe, Don Erbe, Max Mulcahy, Darrell Wherry, Everett Wherry and Teddy Wherry (six of her grandsons).
Surviving are seven children: Mrs Harry (Frances) Mulcahy of Melbourne; Mrs Harvey (Marguerite) Erbe of Floyd; Mrs. John (Mable) Erbe of Cabool, Mo.; Loran of Waterloo; Ralph of Osage; Everett of Riceville; and Harley of LeRoy.
Also surviving are 21 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; one brother, Ross Sutton of Baxter; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Mackrill of Sioux City and Mrs. Tressie Barrett in California.
She was preceded in death by one son, Ebben, who died in 1930; her husband in 1952; one grandson, Jerry Wherry in 1960; and her parents.
