OSAGE, IOWA — Charles Wentworth Carter, 88, of Osage departed this life on Friday (March 24, 2006) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian officiating. Inurnment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

A gathering of family and friends will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., in Osage.

Went was born on April 21, 1917, in Hampton, Iowa, the son of Walter A. and Lura (Wentworth) Carter. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1936 and then attended trade school where he studied electronics.

On Aug. 3, 1943, he married Merle Williams at the First United Methodist Church in Osage. To this union two sons were born, William Wentworth and Bradford Charles.

Went owned and operated “Carter’s Radio and TV” in Osage for about 40 years. He was active in the Osage Rotary Club and the Osage Development Corporation. His hobbies and interests were many, and included woodworking, piloting a small aircraft, pottery, singing in church choir, target shooting, and spelunking.

He enjoyed a good debate on almost any topic, and was ready to take on anyone who was willing. Went was a member of the Osage Masonic Lodge and the First United Methodist Church where he served on the church board.

Went is survived by his wife, Merle, of Osage; two sons, Bill and his wife, Joy, Carter of Wilton; Brad and his wife, Gail, Carter of Waterloo; grandchildren, Carolyn and Alex Carter; step-grandchildren, Eric and Beth Brodahl; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard and wife, Lydia; his sister, Elizabeth Johnson and her husband, Laverne.

Went was a good husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be missed by all who knew him.
