Sam Erickson

D. Sam Erickson, age 72, died on Thursday, July 24, 2003, in Brick, New Jersey.

A memorial celebration will be at the First Presbyterian Church, Mankato, Minnesota, at 2:00 p.m., on July 1, 2004. He gifted his body to the University of New Jersey Medical Center for Alzheimer's research.

Dennis Lee Erickson, was born on January 1, 1931 in Westbrook, Minnesota, son of Edgar and Anna (Roby) Erickson. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1946. Sam held a BA in elementary education and MS in accounting from Arizona State University. November 19, 1950, he married Ann Conklin, formerly of Osage and for 20 years he made monthly two-day trips to Osage to work at Erdmann Motors with Bob and with Marj Pelleymounter. He was a professor of tax, Mankato State University 1967-1992 and a national tax lecturer for the American Institute of CPAs. In 1978, he received from the Minnesota Society of CPAs, the first R. Glen Berryman Award for Outstanding Service.

Upon his retirement, the Sam Erickson Endowment Fund to provide accounting scholarships was established at Minnesota State University, Mankato, by his colleagues and students who wrote: "Sam has made a lasting impact on tax education in the state of Minnesota and nationally."

Sam belonged to the Mankato Masonic Lodge, was Potentate of Osman Shrine Temple, St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1981, a member of the Imperial Shrine Finance & Audit Committee for 23 years serving as Chairman 1985-1991 and was Imperial Shrine Auditor 1991-92. He enjoyed traveling, shelling, was fascinated with family history and proud to have searched for, discovered, visited and entertained so many Norwegian relatives.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Dave.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; his daughters, Sally Weerts of Jacksonville, Florida, Mrs. Randy (Nancy) Eckerson of Rochester, Minnesota, Mrs. Rick (Kathy) Keough of Toms River, New Jersey; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Janet Shaw of Dovray, Minnesota; step-father, Hans Asmussen of Westbrook, Minnesota; and Ellen (Conklin) Elsbury of Osage, a niece through marriage.
