Many Attend Olson Funeral
"The year of 1930 is the year of release for the Olson family." said Rev. Langehough, as he addressed the large number who assembled to attend the funeral of the late Amund Olson, Sunday afternoon. The Reverend took his text from the 15th chapter of Deuteronomy, and referring to the year of release, applied it to the passing of Mr. and Mrs. Amund Olson.
For years, this respected couple resided in this community, until they both had passed the allotted time of four score years. The good wife helpmate, his senior according to time, preceded Mr. Olson in death by a couple months, as she passed away the 25th of June.
Mr. Olson had not been well for many years, and was a constant sufferer during the latter years of his pilgrimage. After the death of his wife, he realized that his days were numbered, and his stay brief. He will be greatly missed, not only by the family and relatives, but by many who learned to know him as he struggled and toiled for his family.
To him it was indeed a year of release. He is gone, but not forgotten, as the large number who gathered to pay their last respects, testified.
This is the second instance where a mother and father, life long residents of this community have been called from their labors, within the last few months. We refer to the passing of Mr. and Mrs. K.L. Leidall and Mr. and Mrs. Olson.
Amund Olson was born on the 17th of June, 1849, in Fladal, Norway. He was baptized by Rev. Lanstad and confirmed by Rev. Selmer. On October 14, 1870, he was united in marriage to Helga Swenson. To this union nine children were born, eight of whom are living: Mrs. Newton Dennis, Mr. W.B. Helfritz, Mrs. E.H. Schwanke, Mrs. Geo. Jahr, Mrs. Julia Peterson, Sam, Ole, and Eggen, all of Lyle.
He came to America with his family. May 24th, 1880, locating at Lyle where they made their home for a year, later moving onto a farm, four miles west of Lyle, where they resided 28 years. He then sold his farm, moving back to Lyle, where he continued to make his home.
He leaves to mourn his passing, besides his family, one brother Osmun Olson, of Lyle, 29 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He passed away Thursday September 4th 1930, at the age of 81 years two months and 18 days. The remains were laid to rest in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Mona, Iowa, in the family lot.
The following from away were here to attend the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wollenberg, Floyd Johnson, Lafayette Olson of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Myhre, B. Myhre, Mrs. Beadle, Mr. and Mrs. Randall Perkins, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ross, Mrs. Ole Olson, all of Austin.
