RUDOLPH HAMRY – ELMA SEFERT

Rudolph E. Hamry was born at Carpenter, Mitchell, Iowa, December 1, 1885, the son of Knut and Martha (Knutson) Hamry. His father died when he was a year old. He and his mother came to Kindred North Dakota in 1888, where she married Soren Ottis in 1892. He had settled on Dakota Territory in 1871. His wife had died in 1888 leaving sons, Louis, George, Bernard and John.

Rudolph received his early education here, and he graduated from Pacific Lutheran College, Tacoma, Washington. For a time he was a cashier at a Wyndmere bank but resigned because of ill health, his doctor having advised him to work a different climate. So he went to Stoney Beach Saskatchewan, Canada, to stake out a claim, living in a tent until a sod home could be finished.

He married Elma Sefert, February 5, 1908 in Carpenter, Iowa, returning to Canada where they lived for three years. Here, their oldest son, Kenneth was born. They returned to Carpenter, Iowa, in 1911. Here twins, Earl and Pearl, were born.

In 1912 they moved to Hinsdale, Montana to settle on a homestead. Here neighbors were far between but so friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand. It was 25 miles to Hinsdale. Forest, Martha, Loren and Gerald were born there. There is was difficult to obtain an education beyond the eighth grade, which was mainly the reason that they moved to Kindred in 1914, settling on a farm previously owned by the Ottis brothers, a mile and a half from town. They retired moving into town, in 1945.

Their son, Forest was killed in a farm accident in 1927, and Gerald was killed in a plane crash in Alaska in 1945. The Kindred Municipal Airport was dedicated to his memory and named Hamry Field in 1955.

Rudolph Hamry died on December 20, 1968, and Elma on August 4, 1967. Three children still live in Kindred; Earl; Martha (Mrs. Sam Whitehead) and Loren. Kenneth resides in Edina, Minnesota, and Pearl (Luther Skari) at Columbus Missouri.
