Ethel Mae Barrett was born March 14, 1891 at Otter Tail, Minnesota, to Jason Merrill Barrett and Ellen D. Hough. Her parents moved to rural Rudd, Floyd, Iowa.

Found in the 1920, 1925 censuses at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa:
1920: Jason Barrett 67, Ellen Barrett 60, Ethel Barrett 25, Julia Hill 20.
1925: Ellen Bassett 67, Ethel Bassett 24 (should both be Barrett, transcribed as found with spelling errors)

Ethel married Ernest Alvin Torney on November 14, 1936 at Northwood, Worth, Iowa. They lived at the Torney farm in Rock township, Mitchell County, Iowa. until moving to Iowa. No children.
Ethel managed a popcorn stand for a number of years.

Ethel Torney died April 13, 1960 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa. Buried at Osage City Cemetery, Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
